Foundational Scholarship

The theoretical, empirical, and theological literature informing the Adaptive Governance in Hybrid Ministry Systems (AG-01) Research Program.

Introduction

Every research program is built upon an existing body of scholarship. The AG-01 Research Program integrates leadership theory, implementation science, nonprofit governance, organizational theory, digital ecclesiology, and biblical stewardship to develop an adaptive governance framework for hybrid ministry systems.

This page documents the principal scholarly works that have informed the conceptual development of the research program and serves as a continually updated literature repository as new scholarship is incorporated.

Domain Overview

Implementation Science provides the operational foundation for AG-01 by explaining how formally designed governance interventions become embedded in everyday organizational practice. Rather than focusing solely on governance policy, implementation science emphasizes fidelity, sustainability, organizational capacity, and continuous improvement. These principles directly inform the dissertation’s transition from legally valid governance documents to operational governance systems.

Although Fixsen et al. developed an implementation science framework applicable across organizational settings, the work does not specifically address governance implementation within hybrid ministry organizations. AG-01 extends this implementation framework to governance systems operating across both physical and digital ministry environments.

Research Purpose

Introduces implementation science as a systematic approach for moving evidence-based interventions into consistent organizational practice. The work identifies the implementation stages, implementation drivers, organizational supports, and continuous improvement processes necessary for sustainable change.

Contribution to AG-01

Provides the primary implementation science framework that guides the operational deployment, governance fidelity, sustainability, evaluation, and institutionalization of governance interventions proposed throughout the Dissertation-in-Praxis.

Why This Work Matters

Implementation Science answers the central question of AG-01:

How does a ministry move from having written governance documents to consistently practicing effective governance?

Rather than assuming new policies automatically change organizations, Fixsen and colleagues demonstrate that successful implementation requires intentional infrastructure, leadership support, training, monitoring, and continuous evaluation. This insight directly informs AG-01’s emphasis on reducing governance latency through operational systems rather than governance documents alone.

Legacy and Continuing Influence

Implementation Research transformed implementation from an intuitive organizational activity into a measurable scientific discipline. AG-01 extends this legacy into governance science by applying implementation principles to hybrid ministry governance systems, demonstrating how governance can become observable, measurable, and continuously improved rather than remaining a static collection of policies.
